LAS VEGAS - At a hastily prepared press conference, NRA spokesflack John Jackson said this morning that the "NRA has nothing but contempt" for the Las Vegas gunman, but quickly noted that the "gun itself" is "totally innocent."

It's not very hard these days to find stories about freedom hating anti-privacy totalitarian fascists trying to chip away another civil liberty or ten from The American PeopleTM. If I'm honest with myself, it's really never been that hard. Then I stumble across this article about yet another piece of reactionary Texas legislation in the works that would mandate online dating services to perform background checks on would-be daters.  Here we go again.

Liberty WatchTime to pile on that moving violation and adolescent shoplifting episode to the mountain of pre-date worries that already includes AIDS, gonorrhea, relationship baggage, and rejection. Remember the lesson here: FEAR EVERYONE, ALL THE TIME. If you don't have their DNA analysis fully digested, you're at risk. Everyone is a potential psychopath who'll lock you in chains and beat you with baseball bats. Like anyone needs MORE things to worry and fear.

Wouldn't it be refreshing to have a reactionary movement that, in the face of international terrorism, didn't decide that the best way to protect our freedom was to eliminate it as much as possible?

In case you're looking for a context here, commondreams.org provides a little insight from the past:
No administration before George W. Bush's ever claimed such sweeping powers for an enterprise as vaguely defined as the "war against terrorism" and the "axis of evil." Nor has one begun to consume such an enormous amount of the nation's resources for a mission whose end would be difficult to recognize even if achieved.

Like previous forms of totalitarianism, the Bush administration boasts a reckless unilateralism that believes the United States can demand unquestioning support, on terms it dictates; ignores treaties and violates international law at will; invades other countries without provocation; and incarcerates persons indefinitely without charging them with a crime or allowing access to counsel.
