Stephen Colbert's skewering of President Bush during April's White House Correspondent's dinner has become legendary on the net.  Yet, IRREVERENT has been notably silent on the matter, which is odd given the amount of virtual flatuence we excrete in the general direction of the Bush Administration on any given day.  This is due to a mixture of hangovers, orgiastic drinking binges, and trying to figure out a truthier angle on the story, none of which, I'm glad to report, have been resolved.  But we should excrete something so here goes.

Colbert and Bush.We like Colbert.  We like him a lot.  And the man's got a pair on him to rival Seabiscuit.

If you haven't seen his roast yet, presumably because you've been in a persistent vegetative state and have only recently recovered consciousness, Google video has the full 24 minute bit courtesy of CSPAN for your laughing pleasure.  Speaking truth to power is a time-honored American tradition, that was officially declared dead by an act of Congress in 2001.

It's refreshing to see the tradition revived, however, and watch a man voluntarily put himself at the top of the Guantanamo Bay Waiting List.  So often all we get to see in this country is the watchdog press roll over and urinate submissively in the face of the Right Wing Power Grab.  It is therefore doubly satisfying to see someone urinating directly in the face of that power, standing up proudly.  I'd celebrate Colbert as the Last American Patriot, except his name sounds vaguely French and so hasn't a Freedom Fry's chance in Hell of making it.
