Yeah, yeah, yeah, how good can a Disney movie really be? Shut your pie hole before I shut it for you. The movie was pretty good. It's been a long time since a good pirate movie came out, hasn't it? I can't remember the last time a good one came out, so it must be true.
Value: $6.00 | | Our rating system is based on a $7 ticket cost and is the most you should pay to see it. | Anyway, it's got good actors and actresses, great special effects (after all, isn't Disney known for creating things that don't exist?), and not too horrible of a plot. There are lots of things to like about this movie. If you're a chick, you will probably love looking at Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. For you men out there, Keira Knightley (The Chick) isn't exactly too hard on the eyes either. If you're a crook, there's all kinds of gold being stolen throughout the movie, not to mention a few ships (it is a pirate movie after all). If you're honest, you probably don't know me, I mean, you'll like it because some of the criminals receive their just rewards. And finally, if you like creepy things like skeletons, there's a bunch of them too.
The whole plot is kind of twisted. You have the story that the movie is named for - the pirates and the ship they sail, The Black Pearl. You also have the plot of the main character, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) who is trying to retrieve what was stolen from him in the first place. There is also the sub plot about a child of a pirate (who doesn't want to be a pirate but becomes one anyway) falling in love with the daughter of a governor who secretly adores pirates and their way of life. Ok, that's probably enough about the plot. Any more details, and I'll have to move again.
Really, I think anyone who is breathing and has a pulse (must have both, not just one or the other) will find something to like in this movie, at least enough of something to be able to sit through it once. I myself have watched it a number of times and truly enjoyed it. I give it $6.00. Yes, I think I like it a little better than Triple X (see last months' review). After all, there's stealing, sex (a whole town of it in fact), death, and double crossing, what's not to love. Oh, and keep the little bambinos away from this one, it's a bit scary (hence the PG-13 rating.)
